Intelligent Infrastructure and Connected Systems

Edge Computing

Edge architectures that process data near its source, with gateways, containerized workloads, local inference and resilient sync for sites where latency, bandwidth or connectivity matter.

Overview

Not every decision can wait for a round trip to the cloud. Remote sites lose connectivity, high-frequency sensors produce more data than backhaul links can carry, and some responses must happen within milliseconds. Edge computing places the right processing where the data originates.

We design and build edge platforms that are as manageable as cloud infrastructure: containerized workloads, remote deployment and rollback, local buffering, and clear rules for what is filtered, aggregated or analyzed on site versus forwarded for central processing.

Business applications

  1. 01

    Local data reduction

Compute features, aggregates and exceptions from high-frequency signals such as vibration or power quality at the edge, forwarding meaningful summaries rather than saturating network links with raw samples.

  2. 02

    Disconnected site operation

Keep local dashboards, alerting and data capture running at mines, vessels, rural facilities or construction sites during connectivity loss, then synchronize with central systems once links return.

  3. 03

    Edge inference

Run anomaly detection or computer vision models on gateways or industrial PCs where latency, bandwidth or data sensitivity makes cloud inference impractical, with models managed and updated centrally.

  4. 04

    Protocol bridging and site gateways

Consolidate OPC UA, Modbus and fieldbus traffic at a site gateway that publishes contextualized MQTT data, giving every site a consistent and secure interface to enterprise systems.

Engineering approach

  1. 01

Decide what belongs at the edge

We assess latency needs, data volumes, connectivity reliability and security constraints for each workload, keeping the edge footprint as small as the requirements allow.

  2. 02

    Select hardware and runtime

Industrial PCs, ruggedized gateways or existing site servers are evaluated alongside runtimes such as AWS IoT Greengrass, Azure IoT Edge or lightweight Kubernetes distributions.

  3. 03

    Package workloads for remote operation

Edge applications are containerized with health checks, resource limits and configuration managed as code, so every site runs a known and reproducible version.

  4. 04

    Engineer store-and-forward sync

Local buffering, ordered replay and idempotent ingestion ensure no data is lost or duplicated during outages, and central systems handle late-arriving data correctly.

  5. 05

    Operate the edge fleet

Remote monitoring, staged rollouts, automated rollback and brokered remote access let a small central team manage many sites without frequent on-site visits.

Questions leaders ask

When is edge computing worth the added complexity?

When latency, bandwidth cost, connectivity reliability or data sensitivity genuinely require it. If a site has dependable connectivity and modest data volumes, sending data to the cloud is usually simpler. We make that assessment workload by workload rather than recommending edge infrastructure by default.

How do you keep many edge devices secure and up to date?

Edge nodes are treated as managed infrastructure: hardened images, signed artifacts, certificate-based identity, minimal open ports and no shared credentials. Updates roll out in stages with automated health checks and rollback, and remote access is brokered, logged and time-limited rather than permanently open.

Can edge systems run machine learning models?

Yes, within hardware limits. Many anomaly detection and classification models run comfortably on industrial PCs or gateways using ONNX Runtime or TensorFlow Lite. Training typically remains centralized, with models versioned, validated and pushed to the edge through the same pipeline as other workloads.
