Energy and Utilities

Grid, generation and customer platforms for a two-way energy system.

The business problem

Utilities and energy companies are managing a system that is changing faster than its software. Distributed solar, batteries, electric vehicles and flexible loads introduce two-way power flows on networks designed for one direction. Smart meters, substation automation and field sensors produce data at volumes that legacy SCADA, outage and billing systems were never sized for. Operations teams need to see and manage the edge of the grid, while customer teams must explain new tariffs, programs and bills to people with rising expectations.

Every advance raises the security and reliability bar. Grid operations are critical infrastructure, subject to obligations such as NERC CIP in North America and the NIS2 Directive in Europe, and an integration that is convenient but poorly segmented creates unacceptable risk. Much operational knowledge lives with experienced engineers approaching retirement. Leaders need platforms that integrate OT and IT data responsibly, apply analytics where it improves planning and operations, and leave control of physical assets with the people accountable for them.

Operational challenges

  1. 01

    Distributed energy at scale

Rooftop solar, storage, EV charging and demand response programs create very large numbers of small, variable resources. Utilities need visibility and coordination capabilities, often through DERMS and standards such as IEEE 2030.5, that traditional systems were not built to provide.

    How iQsolutions solves them

    Secure OT/IT data architecture

We design data flows from SCADA, AMI and field devices into analytics environments using segmented networks, unidirectional gateways or brokered transfers as appropriate, keeping control systems isolated from enterprise and internet exposure.

  2. 02

    Operational data silos

SCADA, IEC 61850 substation devices, AMI head-ends, outage management and GIS each hold vital information. Combining them for planning and operations requires careful integration that respects real-time behavior and security constraints.

    How iQsolutions solves them

Integration in the industry's own language

Integrations use established models: IEC 61850 for substations, CIM (IEC 61968 and 61970) for network data, OCPP for EV charging and IEEE 2030.5 for DER. This reduces bespoke translation and makes future change easier.

  3. 03

    Critical infrastructure security

Connecting operational systems to analytics and cloud platforms must preserve the controls expected under NERC CIP, IEC 62351 and similar frameworks. Security review is frequently the longest step in any grid modernization effort.

    How iQsolutions solves them

    Grid-edge analytics

Time-series and geospatial platforms combine meter, sensor and network model data to support load forecasting, hosting capacity analysis and asset health assessment, with model assumptions and data limitations documented for engineering review and sign-off.

  4. 04

    Customer and program complexity

Time-of-use tariffs, net metering, community solar, EV programs and assistance schemes complicate billing and service. Customers need clear explanations, and service teams need tools that actually understand the programs they support.

    How iQsolutions solves them

    Operator-centered tools

Control room, field and customer service applications are designed with the people who use them, emphasizing clarity under pressure, offline capability for field crews and explicit human authority over any operational action.

Intelligent automation opportunities

Outage communication

Outage events from OMS and AMI data drive customer notifications, restoration updates and service-agent context, keeping messages consistent across text, email, web and phone channels while field crews concentrate on safe restoration.

Asset health and inspection

Sensor data, inspection records and imagery from drones or field crews are analyzed to prioritize work on transformers, poles, lines and vegetation risk, with engineers reviewing the evidence and approving the resulting maintenance plans.

EV charging operations

Charge point management software built on OCPP monitors station health, runs remote diagnostics and resets, opens tickets for persistent faults and schedules charging around tariff signals, grid constraints and site capacity limits.

Billing exception handling

Estimated reads, unusual consumption and tariff or program conflicts are detected and triaged before bills are issued, with suggested resolutions that billing analysts review and approve, reducing the corrections and complaints that follow incorrect bills.

Product and platform opportunities

1

Distributed energy platforms

Software that enrolls, monitors and coordinates customer-owned and utility-owned distributed resources such as batteries, smart thermostats and EV chargers, supporting virtual power plant programs, flexibility services and participant settlement alongside existing grid operations.

2

EV charging networks

Charge point management, roaming through OCPI, driver applications and payment services for charging operators, fleets and property owners, built on open protocols such as OCPP so operators can mix hardware vendors and avoid lock-in.

3

Grid operations data platforms

Unified time-series and geospatial platforms combining SCADA, AMI and asset data, giving planners and operators a shared analytical foundation for forecasting and investment decisions without duplicating sensitive operational data across uncontrolled environments.
