Connected Device Management

Provision, monitor and update connected devices securely, from factory to retirement.

01 · The business problem

Companies that build or operate connected products quickly discover that shipping a device is the beginning of the work, not the end. Every sensor, controller, meter or appliance in the field must be provisioned with an identity, configured for its environment, monitored for health and kept current with firmware and security patches. Early products often rely on a basic vendor cloud service or homegrown scripts that cannot keep pace as the installed base grows.

The gaps become visible in costly ways: field visits to resolve issues that could have been diagnosed remotely, devices running outdated firmware with known vulnerabilities, and support teams with no visibility into what a device is actually doing. Regulators in several markets now expect manufacturers to demonstrate secure update mechanisms and vulnerability handling. Without a dependable management platform, the connected product becomes a liability rather than a source of recurring value.

02 · Proposed solution

We engineer device management platforms that cover the full lifecycle of connected products, from the factory floor to decommissioning. Devices receive cryptographic identities at manufacture or first boot, connect through secure messaging infrastructure and report telemetry into a scalable pipeline. Operators can group, configure and command devices individually or as fleets, with every action recorded.

Over-the-air update services deliver firmware and application changes through staged rollouts with health checks and automatic rollback. Support teams and customers see role-appropriate device status, while product teams gain usage and reliability insight that informs the next hardware and software iteration. Integration with ERP, field service and customer systems makes devices part of the business process.

03 · System components

Device management platforms for manufacturers and operators of connected products, covering provisioning, telemetry, remote configuration, over-the-air updates and fleet-wide observability.

Connected Device Management
  1. 01

    Provisioning and Identity

Zero-touch onboarding using X.509 certificates or hardware secure elements, binding each device to its owner, product model and configuration profile without manual credential handling in the field.

  2. 02

    Messaging and Telemetry Pipeline

MQTT and HTTPS ingestion with device shadows, buffering and stream processing that tolerate intermittent connectivity and route telemetry to storage, alerting and analytics while keeping each device's reported and desired state aligned.

  3. 03

    Fleet Configuration and Command

Group-based configuration, remote commands and scheduled jobs targeted by model, region, firmware version or customer, with approvals for actions that could affect many devices at once.

  4. 04

    OTA Update Service

Signed firmware and software packages distributed through staged rollouts, with canary groups, health monitoring, pause controls and rollback to a known-good version when problems appear.

  5. 05

    Device Operations Console

A workspace for operations and support teams showing fleet health, connectivity, alerts and device history, with diagnostic tools that resolve many issues without a site visit.

04 · Engineering approach

Engineering approach

  1. 01

    Security from silicon to cloud

We work with hardware teams on secure boot, key storage and signed firmware, so trust established at manufacture carries through every connection and update in the field.

  2. 02

    Assume unreliable networks

Devices go offline, reconnect out of order and run on constrained bandwidth. Protocols, data models and update logic are engineered for those conditions rather than for ideal lab networks.

  3. 03

    Gradual, observable rollouts

No update reaches the whole fleet at once. Staged deployment, telemetry-based health gates and fast rollback turn change into a routine operation rather than a risky event.

  4. 04

    Build on managed foundations

Where it fits, we use cloud IoT services for undifferentiated plumbing and focus custom engineering on the product-specific logic and experiences that distinguish the client's offering.

05 · Integration landscape

  • AWS IoT Core / Azure IoT Hub
  • MQTT brokers (EMQX, HiveMQ, Eclipse Mosquitto)
  • LwM2M / CoAP for constrained devices
  • Mender / Memfault OTA tooling
  • X.509 PKI and hardware secure elements
  • Cellular connectivity management platforms
  • ServiceNow / Salesforce Field Service
  • SAP / Oracle ERP
  • InfluxDB / TimescaleDB time-series storage
  • Grafana / OpenTelemetry

06 · Security considerations

  • Each device holds a unique cryptographic identity, and credentials can be revoked individually without affecting the rest of the fleet.
  • Firmware and configuration packages are signed and verified on the device before installation, preventing tampered or unauthorised updates.
  • Remote commands and bulk operations require role-based authorisation, with high-impact actions subject to multi-person approval and full audit logging.
  • A documented vulnerability handling and update process supports obligations under regulations such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act and the UK PSTI regime.
  • Telemetry is encrypted in transit and at rest, and customer data is segregated by tenant in multi-customer deployments.

07 · Delivery phases

  1. 1

    Discover

Review hardware, connectivity, existing cloud services, support workflows and regulatory obligations for the product line.

  2. 2

    Architect

Define identity, messaging, data, update and tenancy architecture alongside hardware and firmware teams.

  3. 3

    Engineer

Build provisioning, telemetry, command and OTA services, using device simulators for scale and failure testing.

  4. 4

    Integrate

Connect manufacturing, ERP, field service and customer systems, and migrate existing devices where feasible.

  5. 5

    Operate and evolve

Support production rollouts, refine alerts and dashboards, and extend capabilities to new product generations.

08 · Business value

Business value

Fewer site visits

Remote diagnostics, configuration and updates let teams resolve many issues from the console, reserving field service for problems that genuinely require hands-on work, with technicians arriving prepared when a visit is needed.

A defensible security posture

Signed updates, per-device identity and a documented vulnerability process help manufacturers meet customer expectations and growing regulatory requirements for connected products, and answer security questionnaires with evidence rather than assurances.

Better product decisions

Usage and reliability telemetry show how devices behave in real environments, informing firmware priorities, hardware revisions and the design of new service offerings based on field data rather than anecdote.

Foundation for recurring services

Dependable management of the installed base makes it practical to offer monitoring, maintenance and feature subscriptions built on top of connected products, turning each device into an ongoing customer relationship.
